Through rare photos and personal essays, Climbing Fitz Roy, 1968 tells the tale of a six-month excursion to Patagonia, Chile, that changed the lives of five rock climbers dubbed the “Funhogs”—Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia), Doug Tompkins (founder of The North Face/Esprit), Dick Dorworth, Chris Jones and Lito Tejada-Flores. The 1968 Fitz Roy climb would impact the environmental movement and outdoor industry for years to come.
The book is newly released and you have a chance to win a linen-bound hardcover copy!
About the Book
Climbing Fitz Roy, 1968: Reflections on the Lost Photos of the Third Ascent
by Yvon Chouinard, Dick Dorworth, Chris Jones, Lito Tejada-Flores and Doug TompkinsForty-five years later, rare, once-lost photos of a legendary climb in Patagonia reveal a vivid glimpse into mountaineering history. Recently rediscovered after a devastating house fire, the photos in Climbing Fitz Roy, 1968 capture the first ascent of the California Route on Cerro Fitz Roy, a trip so seminal that it spawned two businesses and gave momentum to the environmental movement.
It was a 16,000-mile six-month trip in a 1965 Ford Econoline van from Ventura, California to Patagonia. Five climbers dubbed the “Funhogs”—Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia), Doug Tompkins (founder of The North Face/Esprit), Dick Dorworth, Chris Jones and Lito Tejada-Flores—waited in ice caves for 31 days before the weather cleared so they could successfully reach the Fitz Roy summit. Prior to the book, several films immortalized the trek, including the well-known “Mountain of Storms” documentary.
The linen-bound hardcover book features retrospective essays from the Funhogs on how they were profoundly shaped by this life-changing experience and subsequently led others in both the environmental movement and the establishment of responsible business practices.
