With my longest training run being 30km, and having logged only 174km of total running for the entire MONTH of July, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t just a wee bit nervous about my second ever ultra race; the Squamish50 (I did the 50km course). Aside from just generally being lazy post-Vancouver Marathon, I pulled my groin bad playing soccer and was completely sidelined for two weeks.
Trail Running Run-Down: July 2013
Photo by Jay Klassen via solanaleigh.com There were several great races this month, including the home-town favorite North Shore Knee Knackering Trail Race. And what a race it was this year! Not only was it the 25th Knee Knacker, but it came down to a sprint-finish with some very impressive times, and almost a new […]
Trail Running Run-Down: May 2013
Photo by Ruth and Dave in the Outdoor Vancouver Flickr Pool The trail running season kicked into high-gear in May with 8 races taking place, including the first in the 5 Peaks series, the ever-popular Iron Knee, and the brand new Buckin’ Hell. I was at 5 Peaks Golden Ears and Buckin’ Hell and they […]
Race Reports – 5 Peaks, Golden Ears & Buckin’ Hell
Last weekend, on May 11, the trail running season really kicked off with the first 5 Peaks event of the year; Golden Ears. I was really looking forward to putting on the trail shoes after finishing the Vancouver Marathon.
#RunVan Update – To BQ or Not to BQ
Last Sunday I was fortunate to get to the start line of the BMO Vancouver Marathon feeling healthy and ready to try and get a BQ (Boston Qualifier), by running a time of sub-3:05. My previous best marathon time was 3:16 at the 2012 Vancouver Marathon. My Dad was in town so I stayed at his hotel downtown with my son, and managed about 4 hours of interrupted, restless sleep. Having a 5 year old constantly kicking you in the face doesn’t help you sleep when you’re already feeling restless.
#RunVan Update 10 – Race Day!
Well, the big day is fast approaching with less only 2 sleeps to go. I’ve been enjoying the time provided with shorter runs and having a few extra days off running.
On Wednesday I had my final ‘speedwork’ session at the track, and will just fit in 1 (maybe 2) easy runs before Sunday.
Overall, I’m really happy with my training over the past 5 months and think I’ll have a chance at reaching my goal on race day, which is all I can ask. I didn’t suffer any major set-backs, and the only ‘injury’ I’ve had is a nagging IT band issue which has been tolerable, and has almost disappeared completely with the last 2 weeks of tapering.
