The EMS One Hitter is a great hydration pack. I’ve used it for running for a few weeks and like it over my other pack (a Nathan Sports HPL 008) for a few reasons.
My favorite thing about this pack is the volume for the weight. It allows you to carry a lot of stuff in a pack that is very comfortable and hardly noticeable on your back. It has an outer mesh pocket that is large enough to easily store an extra layer of clothing. Inside the main compartment there is a 2L Nalgene bladder and divided internal pocket with plenty of room to pack your phone, keys, and food.
At just under 1 pound, it is very light, and comfortable to wear. I have been using it on the 13km jogs I do to and from my office. Because those runs are only about 1 hour, I remove the bladder to save space/ weight and it works great. I think how I will get the most use out of this pack is when I begin triathlon training. There is a pool en-route to my office and this pack is large enough to store a small towel with swim gear so I can actually run to the pool, get in a swim, then continue running into the office.
That said, the bladder itself works great and can be used to the left or right shoulder. It’s been snowing here, and I haven’t yet taken it out on a good, long backcountry trail run, but it will be perfect for that too. At a very marginal weight increase, I like how I can comfortably store an extra layer and other things than with the Nathan pack I was using before. The Nathan may be better if I was racing and simply needed hydration, but the One Hitter is more realistic for a training run or hike in the woods.
The only downside to the One Hitter is lack of accessible pockets on the shoulder straps. If you want to stuff your GPS device, or an energy gel in a position where you can grab it without stopping to take off the pack, you’re out of luck. I would prefer to stuff a Gu into my shoulder strap than in my short pockets, but that’s my only grief with the pack.
