As avid hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, we’re always on the lookout for innovative gear that enhances our experience in the outdoors. Enter the Tentsile Trillium Giant 3-Person Camping Hammock – a unique hammock that allows you to really sprawl out, or share relaxation time with friends and family.
As described by Tentsile, the Trillium is “perfect for setting up in the garden, the campsite or at your basecamp as a hangout spot for the whole camping trip. The Trillium is easy to use and convenient enough to be pitched on a whim for a family picnic in the woods or backyard camping.”
We recently took the Trillium out for a spin on a weekend car camping trip, and here’s what we discovered
The Basics
The Trillium Giant Camping Hammock is a tree-mounted hammock designed to comfortably sleep three adults. It features a triangular design with three anchor points and a floor area of 75 square feet. Due to its size, and sturdy materials, the hammock weighs in at a hefty 17 lbs, and holds 880 lbs of weight.
Think of your regular hammock, but super-sized, made super strong, and with three anchor points.
For options, it comes in fabric, mesh, or mesh with a removable quilt. It also comes in a massive 6 person XL version.
Setup and Ease of Use
Setting up the Trillium Giant requires a bit of practice the first time, but once you get the hang of it, it’s relatively straightforward. You’ll need to find three sturdy trees in a triangular formation. The included ratchet system makes tensioning the hammock simple, though it does add some weight to the pack.
On the down-side, the requirement for three trees in triangular formation could be a challenge in some environments. Luckily, at our campsite, we were able to make it work. But I could see in some scenarios that you might not get as lucky, depending on the campsite or location.
Comfort and Space
Once suspended, the Trillium Giant offers a stable and comfortable sleeping platform. The fabric, once ratcheted, is taught and provides good support, and the spacious footprint allows for easy movement without disturbing your hammock-mates. We found that three adults could indeed sleep comfortably, though it’s a snug fit.
For one or two people, its hammock nirvana.
Other considerations
Although we don’t have it and weren’t able to review it, the hammock does have an optional roof kit. Tentsile is know for high quality tenting hammocks, and having the roof-kit could add a lot more use to your hammock by making it a minimalist shelter, negating the need for a traditional tent if you’re camping.
Pros:
- Unique camping experience, if used with the roof tent
- Spacious for two people, and still comfortable for three.
- Keeps you off the ground (great for rocky or wet terrain)
- Fun social space for daytime use in the yard or car camping
Cons:
- Heavier than traditional hammocks (not good for backpacking)
- Requires suitable trees for setup
- More expensive than traditional hammock
Final Thoughts
The Tentsile Trillium Giant 3-Person Camping Hammock offers a fun approach to backcountry realaxtion (and shelter). While it may not be the most practical option for all hiking situations, it excels in forested areas and provides a memorable camping experience. It’s best suited for car camping or in the yard, where weight and size isn’t a concern.
For hikers looking to add some adventure and uniqueness to their outdoor stays, the Trillium Giant is worth considering. Just be prepared for some curious (and jealous) glances from fellow campers!
