In Vancouver we are fortunate to have a myriad of hiking trails within a short driving distance from the city. From Chilliwack to Pemberton there are more trails than you could ever hope to explore in one lifetime. But not all trails are made equal. Here are my top 8 characteristics of a great trail. In no particular order:
- Few people – The biggest draw-back to hikes like the Chief and the Grouse Grind are the sheer amount of people you have to share the trail with. Especially on your way back down, it can be annoying to navigate around people on a busy trail. A great trail will be off the beaten path, and far less crowded.
- Technical and difficult sections – A great hike will be challenging. There will be some sections that are technically difficult, and force you to think carefully about your foot placement and route up the mountain. Lots of elevation gain is also a big plus.
- A jaw-dropping view at the summit – This is why you’re doing the hike in the first place right?
- Scenery and viewpoints – Not just at the summit, but along the way. A great trail will have different types of scenery throughout. Lookouts, heavily forested switchbacks, open valleys and meadows, creeks, waterfalls, lots of eye candy.
- Water – Lakes, streams and creeks are all a big plus. Having a source of fresh water to fill up your water bottle is important, especially on overnighters. A glacier fed lake is also the perfect way to cool off. Camping on the edge of a serene, quit lake with a setting sun. Unbeatable.
- Good spot to camp – A great trail to me is one that isn’t accomplished in one day. Camping is part of the fun.
- Wildlife – Deer, eagles, owls, marmot, black bear and cougars. Ok, maybe not cougars.
- Multiple routes – A great trail will have multiple routes to the summit, or maybe even multiple summits. This ensures things never get boring.
A perfect example of a hike matching these qualities is Black Tusk. It is very challenging as you approach the base of the final ascent. Garibaldi lake is nearby, providing the perfect campsite. There are other trails nearby, like the hike up to beautiful Panorama Ridge. Oh, and the view….
